Read the latest Oxfam press released on coronavirus
Updates: Since Danny wrote this letter, there have been updates to shops no longer accepting donations, second-hand items not being sold on the online shop and we have opened a coronavirus response appeal.
Danny Sriskandarajah: "Coronavirus: our deepest concern is keeping people as safe as possible."
I hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and well.
As all of us are coming to terms with the devastating impact of Coronavirus, I wanted to keep you up to date on the steps we're taking in our work with people around the world, and with our shops and volunteers across the UK. I also know supporters like you have been asking us about what it will mean for the world's poorest communities.
Our deepest concern is keeping people as safe as possible. Alongside local partners, we're preparing for the scale of the crisis to grow rapidly, especially in refugee camps where self-isolation is so challenging. From responding to the Ebola crisis, to preventing the spread of cholera in the most challenging living conditions, our experience tells us we can make a major difference. We're planning for a dramatic increase in the demands placed on our local water and sanitation experts and the supplies they need to deliver clean water, hand washing and toilet facilities. This work is, as ever, only possible with your support. Thank you. Knowing how important public support is, it's with a heavy heart that we have decided to close our high street shops from the end of this Saturday. It's absolutely the right thing to do as the safety of our staff, volunteers and shoppers comes first. Some of our volunteers are elderly, and especially vulnerable to the infection, and we are acutely conscious of our responsibilities towards them.
Oxfam's Online Shop will remain open for now but some of our ranges will not be available. We're unable to accept donations for the time being, so please don't leave them outside shops or in donation banks. Once it is safe to do so, we'd love to accept your items, so please hold onto them for now.
Other national and local events that we rely on for income (such as the London Marathon and Glastonbury) are being cancelled or postponed. If you were planning to attend one of our events please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone us on 0300 200 1300.
If you can, please do keep donating, shopping and taking action with us. You can and will continue to make a massive difference around the world - this short video is a lovely reminder of why it matters so much.
Thank you again for your continued support at this time. More than anything please do stay well and stay healthy.
